I certainly didn’t feel like a friend of Caitlyn’s last night though. I look at the police officer, watching me. I’m wasting time getting carried away with my thinking and he’s waiting for my reply.

‘I would say their relationship was up and down. It was up after they got engaged but then, like I say, I’ve hardly seen her for a couple of months.’ I remember when she first showed me her beautiful diamond solitaire. I tried to act congratulatory, but when I left her, I came home and stuffed my face to console myself. Firstly, because an engagement ring was what I wanted for myself, and secondly because I was worried about the risk of our friendship changing.

‘Were you not involved in all the hen party preparations?’

Here we go. The bit that really, really upset me. I don’t even want to talk about it, but I’ll have to tell them the truth in case it comes out via one of the others. And Jen is such a cow that she’s bound to say something. ‘I didn’t know about her hen party until last weekend.’ I bite my lip.

‘Oh? Was it a last-minute thing?’

‘Well, no. Just nobody had thought to invite me. I was so upset with Caitlyn and I felt really left out.’

‘That must have hurt.’ He frowns. ‘Particularly when you’ve been such a good friend to her.’

‘It really did. Caitlyn said she’d not put me on the list because she didn’t think I’d come. I don’t really have nights out, but it would be nice to have been invited.’

It was one thing when we were just spending time in each other’s houses, but clearly I’m not the coolest person – I don’t fit in anywhere and Caitlyn was embarrassed about me. Having said that, she’d invited Adele, and she’s not what you’d describe as cool either.

‘Do you know anyone other than Caitlyn – out of the people who are here?’

‘Not really. I’ve seen Jen and Emma in passing, when they’ve been visiting Caitlyn. I was there once at the same time as Emma. She’s nice, like Caitlyn. I’ve got medical issues, so I’m nearly always at home. It’s not that I’m nosy, but my chair is right next to the window that faces onto her house.’

‘Did you see much of Ben’s family going around?’

‘Hardly ever. His daughter, Lucy, stayed there from time to time, but less so recently. It surprised me at their lack of visiting whilst Caitlyn was ill, especially when she was really struggling.’

This would be an appropriate time to mention Shelley, but something stops me. I was going to speak to her this weekend and was planning to get her on her own. I would have liked to witness her expression when telling her who I’d seen her with. I’d rehearsed my line so many times – You’ve got until the end of the day to tell Caitlyn… or I will. I’ve never had such power, and I was hanging onto it for a bit longer – at least until I knew what to do with it.
